DOO-RI CHUNG

PROFILE

Doo-Ri Chung is the new face of Korean American designer among the recent rising stars of New York fashion. After graduating from Parsons School of Design in 1995 with the prestigious Designer of the Year award, she was noticed by the legendary American couture designer Geoffrey Beene. In 2001, after designing for Geoffrey Beene for 6 years, she started her own line.

Doo-Ri Chung quickly began to gain recognition for her use of jersey and draping abilities thus being awarded the Woolite Fashion Future Grant in 2003, and the Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation Award in 2004. She also received the honor to be a finalist of 2004 CFDA/VOGUE Fashion Fund Award, which prompted the realization of the film Seamless, a documentary about Doo-Ri Chung, first shown in Tribeca Film Festival in 2005. Recently, she has been admitted and inducted as a new member to the CFDA Council of Fashion Designers of America.

DESIGN

Doo-Ri Chung begins by eliminating lines. The incorporation of jersey allows her to contour the body without the use of seams and darts. This is the basis and foundation of her design processes. Doo-Ri Chung uses draping to create slipping curve effects, while making cutting variations to express structurally refined silhouettes. Mixing and matching a variety of materials and contrasting softness with intensity are also characteristics of her design.
